As Seen On Investigation Discovery's "Epic Mysteries"

"A true crime murder mystery that will leave you gasping for breath"--Steve Jackson, New York Times bestselling author of BOGEYMAN and NO STONE UNTURNED

"A doozy of a murder"--Suzy Spencer, New York Times bestselling author of BREAKING POINT

Burl Barer, with co-author Frank Giradot, has hit yet another home run with this crime story. A smart and well-written who-dunnit tale.--Cathy Scott, Los Angeles Times bestselling author of THE KILLING OF TUPAC SHAKUR

Frank Rodriguez, a much-loved counselor of troubled teens, lies dead on the bedroom floor. His wife and step-daughter are in shock, and so is the medical examiner when he performs the autopsy. Aside from being dead, Frank is in perfect health.

Demanding to know the cause of her husband’s death, Angie Rodriguez badgers the police, insisting that Frank was murdered. The cops attribute her assertions to overwhelming grief, but soon they too believe that Frank didn’t die of natural causes.

When the police enlist their number one suspect to help in the investigation, things spiral out of control until police are dealing with a daring plot to murder Angie’s best friend, and allegations of another homicide so evil and perverse that even seasoned L.A County Detectives are shocked beyond belief ... and so will the readers!

I'll open with the proviso that the publisher of this book, Wild Blue Press, is the same publisher that is printing our next true crime book. They did not solicit this review - I saw their notice for a flash-sale on this book for 99 cents and picked it up. (If you follow them on Facebook, they do these kinds of sales often and obviously you can score some good true crime cheap.) So, this is an unbiased review. Also, I will give no spoilers.
Burl Barer sucked me in early on with this book. Frank Hernandez dies at home, dying a most horrible death…apparently from poisoning. His wife suspected a colleague of the crime. From there, Barer takes you on a joyride into the bizarre. From the opening of this crime this seemed cut-and-dry, but it is like riding the Hulk rollercoaster at Universal Studios. You think you're going one way and bam! You're suddenly spinning the opposite direction.
Mr Barer does an outstanding job of putting the reader in the community where this murder took place, Montebello, CA. Adding to that was the details of what this poisoning did the victim. This is not a clinical read, but one that helps you understand just how horrific this murder really was.
I have never read any of Burl Barer's books but I became a quick fan. He leads you down a dark corridor, lantern in hand, on a journey that I didn’t expect at the start of the book. I devoured chapter after chapter, not ever losing my interest. After the first third of the book, it was as if there was a new twist every chapter or two. Barer masterfully takes you on the long journey from murder to conviction.
To say that this case was full of bizarre behavior is an understatement. The murderer seems to be running con jobs within con jobs at times.
About halfway through the book I realized I actually had heard something about this case. That didn't diminish it in the least for me.
Is this a good solid true crime book? Absolutely. Well worth your time to consume (pun intended).

A Taste For Murder eBook Burl Barer Frank C Girardot Reviews

I found this book most interesting and the murderer to be a very disturbing character. She was so beautiful, had almost everything going for her, and yet she threw it all away. For what? You have to read the book to find out. I couldn't find the email address of the author he said to use for this...so I'll just state here that yes, I do think Angie was guilty of the second crime mentioned in the book (don't want to make a spoiler here). The reason I believe this is that I don't think Angie had a conscience left... so money became everything to her, not child care. I bought the edition and found it quite readable and enjoyable! So thanks to the author for this good work.
Angelina Rodríguez, never will forget that name for her twisted, cartoon world that only herself lived by. Its a fun read with twist and incredible tale of true crime in its most amazing peek. I would like to congratulate the authors of this crazy true crime story Burl Barer and Frank C. Girardot Jr. The best part was the recording audio, it takes you to another lead.... Death Row is only the beginning......
Really gripping true crime story. This really reads like an episode Snapped come to life. Its more chilling to read because you realize this is NOT a TV show, everything you read really happened. The writers also do a very good job at presenting all the sides to the story. It would be very easy to vilify the main protagonist in the center of this saga, the murderous wife, Angelina, but they manage to do the impossible and almost make you feel sorry for her, or at the very least understand her side and how she got to the point that she did in life.
The story really puts many things in perspective, the neighborhoods, the cultural times, etc. to give you a sense of how this story emerges and it will hook you until the end.
I honestly thought this would be just another juicy murder story that I could use to read before bedtime, but I found myself becoming fascinated (and disturbed) and sucked in after just a few chapters.
Recommended if you like this genre...it wont disappoint!
A truly remarkable read about a highly unusual case, backed by an incredibly in-depth view of the case files. Additionally, a very in-depth look at the psyche of a woman who was, to put it simply, damaged. "A Taste For Murder" is a thorough examination of the life and death of Frank Rodriguez as well as the life and circumstances of his "Wicked Widow" Angelina Rodriguez which, while far from exonerating the murderer gives a fair and total look at her life and what may have driven her to the crime that landed her on California's Death Row. I ordered the Paperback and wound up reading the full novel on my iPhone over about a 6 hour span. Highly recommended for anyone who loves a good bit of true crime. Did she do it? Were there mitigating factors? Take a read, consider the evidence, and develop your own thoughts on whether or not the justice system got it right.
Though I was familiar with this story, having seen it on one of the many one-hour crime shows on Investigation Discovery, this author delivered much more than a brief glimpse of what happened. He developed the characters with personalities that were realistic and compelling, both the good and the bad. The writing style was easy to read and understand, sometimes even humorous, without a lot of boring technical mumbo jumbo. I highly recommend this book for true crime readers who like to get to know the people, not just the facts.
Great telling of a horrible human being. Well written without so much detail that it would be hard to read. Compelling from start to finish. It tells us why she did what she did....and how. It's obvious that much research went into this book. This story teaches us you never know wher true evil lurks.
